On the evening of the 20th October 2016 The FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University and our sponsors will be hosting a Question Time evening at the Anglia Ruskin University campus in Chelmsford. The Question Time event will focus on business in our region and include a number of topics such as business rates, car parking, business development & growth, business support, pensions, national living wage, employment and export to name a few.

The evening will be hosted by local entrepreneur and the Essex Chairman for the FSB, David Bell. This Question Time evening is guaranteed to spark some exciting questions and no doubt some sensational debate. David is a highly accomplished, award-winning company director, entrepreneur, business coach & keynote speaker. He is passionate about helping others succeed and driving businesses forward to achieve their full potential.

Starting his entrepreneurial journey back in the mid 90s at the tender age of seventeen, David has built a number of successful businesses over the past twenty plus years.  In 2015 David was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs for his contribution to UK enterprise.

The ability to attract and retain appropriately skilled employees is a strategic imperative to delivering competitive advantage. Having been through School and both further and higher Education in the local area, Suzanne is passionate about increasing the link between regional economic growth and skills provision. This can be achieved by increasing the employer voice at the heart of the debate and working to improve the perception and awareness of the Careers that are available to our future workforce on their door step.

Marcia Baldry - Enterprise & Entrepreneurship Manager at Anglia Ruskin University

Marcia is currently based within the Lord Ashcroft International Business School (LAIBS), where she is the operational lead for Anglia Ruskin Enterprise Academy (AREA). She is responsible for the establishment, development and implementation of an operational plan to ensure that students from across all Faculties and Campuses have  access to and can benefit from embedded enterprise modules as well as have access to extra-curricular enterprise and entrepreneurship activities. Her role is integral to the establishment of (AREA).

With a background that encompasses International Banking; Full-service Marketing Agency; private Public Relations Company and Anglia Ruskin University, she is passionate about enterprise and entrepreneurship education and its effects on, not only the UK economy but also on the EU and internationally.

Marcia is a true professional: she is a ‘Chartered Marketer’ and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and has other management qualifications. To continue her professional development she has just completed the International Entrepreneurship Educators Programme (IEEP 2015/16) making her an IEEP Fellow.

Bernard Jenkin MP -  MP of Harwich and North Essex

Following a series of roles at Ford, 3i and Legal & General, Bernard Jenkin was elected to Parliament in 1992. He has subsequently served as Shadow Energy Minister, Shadow Transport Minister and Shadow Defence Secretary. Between 2006 and 2010, Bernard sat on the House of Commons Defence Select Committee and in the last Parliament he chaired the House of Commons Public Administration Select Committee.

Today he is a member of the Executive of the 1922 Committee of backbench Conservative MPs and Chair of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Select Committee. This committee has focused on strategic thinking in government; civil service skills, capability and the training and education civil servants; leadership of change in Whitehall; Whitehall governance and ethics; procurement and IT; government statistics and future challenges facing the UK which Whitehall must meet. 

Bernard regularly speaks on European issues and was on the board of Vote Leave. He was heavily involved in both the No to AV and North East Says No campaigns.

Bernard is also the author of a number of publications on the European Union, UK defence policy and Conservativism.

Jacob Hill - Ex-offender, Entrepreneur & Founder of Offploy

Jacob is a young, proficient and eager entrepreneur with a notable history of business success behind him. By the tender age of twenty-one, Jacob’s prolific portfolio of entrepreneurial antics had won him a string of awards including; the Yorkshire Post’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year and the Duke of York’s Young Entrepreneur Award.

He first caught the business bug as a teenager; keen to find his flair in the field he started an underground sweet selling enterprise at his secondary school, which quickly picked up momentum and became a multifaceted operation with its own staff and an impressive turnover. After his school days, Jacob organised local music events, but when a new law shut his venture down, he worked to pay back his debts and looked ahead to where he could next find a worthwhile business concept.

John Spence CBE - Cabinet Member for Finance, Housing and Planning

John Spence was elected to Essex County Council in 2013 representing the Chelmer Division. He is currently Cabinet Member for Finance, Housing & Planning, and Heritage Culture & Arts.

John’s main business career was in Lloyds Bank from 1972 – 2005 where he held six different managing director roles. Subsequent non-executive appointments have included HM Revenue & Customs, Capital for Enterprise Ltd, the Money Advice Service, and Skipton Building Society. He is currently chairman of Call Credit Information Group Ltd and Spicerhaart Group Ltd.

On the voluntary side John is Finance Chairman of the Archbishop’s Council of Church of England and sits on many other church bodies. Blind since 1990 he has been President or Chairman of disability charities such a Blind in Business, Enable, Action for Blind People and Revitalise. He is Treasurer of QE II Diamond Jubilee Trust and finance chair of Business in the Community. In Essex John serves on Chelmsford Cathedral Council and is a governor of Anglia Ruskin University; he was previously chairman of Essex Community Foundation.

John has successively been awarded the MBE, OBE and CBE for services to the Community, to Charity and to Business, and is a Deputy Lieutenant for the County.

John is married to Yvonne and they have 3 children & 5 grandchildren. He loves cooking and dinner parties, the theatre, listening to sport, swimming and his motorbike.
